CREATIVE PRODUCER • EDITOR • WRITER • DESIGNER

onset02bwScott is an artist and a craftsman, whose goal isn’t to become a ‘jack of all trades’. Rather, he constantly strives to master and fine-tune his skills as a writer, director, editor, and designer. “Without a doubt, these four roles reinforce each other. For example, when I’m directing something I didn’t write, I use my skills as a writer to interpret the intention of the writer. I can translate it, and refine it, so that in the end, the original message of a piece comes across. This is the case regardless of which role or combination of roles I might play in a production. I can be brought in as a director and editor, or just as a designer, etc. In the end, I’m a storyteller. ”

If you have a product, or a service, or an idea to sell, then you have a story to tell. When you’re ready to tell that story, get in touch with Scott, before you begin planning your production. In addition to offering the services listed below, Scott is always happy to offer his insight, recommend solutions, or even just “blue sky” some ideas with you, for your next project.

CREATIVE PRODUCER

DIRECTORWhether directing a commercial, or producing an educational video, for over 20 years, Scott has been creating images and stories for screens of all shapes, sizes, and audience types. When asked how he approaches making commercials, Scott said, “When you think about it, a commercial is like a small movie. Both need to convey a story to sell something, be it an idea, or a point of view, or a product. In both cases, the story can be comedic, sad, dramatic, romantic, adventurous, etc, and in both cases, the same tools are used. With commercials, it’s just done on a much smaller budget and time scale. The challenge in advertising, as with film, is to discover the best way to tell the story.”

He has an eclectic style, ranging from the comedic, to the dramatic, and from clever concepts, to the tastefully simple approach. This diversity is the result of his desire to tailor every project to fit the client’s message, while creating a unique look that cuts through the normally bland landscape of ‘rinse and repeat’ advertising. He finds inspiration for his ideas everywhere. “They come from paintings, music, architecture, books, design, motion pictures, etc., but I’ve also found that ideas can come from a simple moment that happens in the middle of a day. It’s about communication… human communication. Of course, it’s about selling a product or an idea, but in the end, it’s always about telling a story.”

EDITOR

EDITORScott began his career over 25 years ago, as a video & film editor. His approach to editing is a lot like it is with his writing… he believes that it should flow, seamlessly. “The audience shouldn’t see your editing. Editing should be transparent. Actions, like words, have a rhythm. One clip’s rhythm should not only match that of the others around it, but it should match in a way so that when the final piece is viewed, it’s one unbroken rhythm. You’re obviously cutting different shots together to show the audience the different perspectives and subjects that you want and need them to see, but don’t distract them from the message by hitting them over the head with your edit.”

In addition to editing, Scott also specializes in color grading, and 2D FX/compositing. He sees those roles as part of his editing process. “They’re tools in the post production phase. Post is about assembling the elements and putting the final polish on everything. Again, if the goal is to make everything seamless, then things like color grading and 2D FX/compositing are really essential tools to have in your arsenal.”

WRITER

WRITERFor over 15 years, Scott has written for TV and radio commercials, print advertising, TV shows, and a variety of corporate communications. Along with crediting his education and background to having to successfully condense copy and testimonials in an edit suite, he points to one of the loves of his life, namely music, as the reason for his success as a writer. “Words are like music. They have a rhythm… a melody. There’s nothing that turns off an audience more quickly, than words written without any consideration to the ‘music’. I love language… all language. The power of words can motivate people to act, or make a character believable.  Words should flow, whether they are to be heard, or to be read.”

To Scott, everything and everyone has a story. “We’re all basically a collection of our personal stories. We love to tell them, and we love to hear them. Entertainment, advertising, even corporate communication is a way of telling a story. Of course, it’s about selling a product or an idea, but in the end, it’s always about telling a story. It’s all about communication… human communication. If you can make people want to hear what you have to say, then you have a pretty good shot at getting them to want what you have to sell.”

DESIGNER

DESIGNERScott recalls how he added graphic design to his skill set, “My role as a designer really came about as a natural progression from my role as an editor. It was that, plus the fact that where I first worked as an editor, there were no less than five other editors all fighting over one graphic artist. It became necessary to become my own graphic artist.”

Learning basic layout principles and typography, Scott soon became a much sought after editor for his design chops. “It was the one time in an edit where you were actually creating an image from scratch, instead of just manipulating an existing one, so my original approach was to treat it no differently than a photographer or director would treat the framing of an image. Over time, this evolved into layout for motion graphics, as well.”

After a great deal of training and experience, Scott turned his talents toward print design, as well as design for the web. “My father was a lithographer,” he says, “so I don’t suppose it should come as a surprise that I stumbled into doing something very similar. My medium just happens to be digital.”
